Illustrated by Angel Dominguez and adapted by Jen Wainwright. I had to put this one in. Nice little book and I quite liked the illustrations. I thought to add to my collection some of those tales we grew up with. Some of us anyway.
It has some of the all time favourites like Goldilocks, The Three Little Pigs and Little Red Riding Hood. I will tell you what it does not have just off the top of my head Snow White and Sleeping Beauty. I guess it would be hard with Snow white since all the illustrations are black and white. A blank page for Snow White or maybe make the queen black? But then everyone else would probably not fare so well in that version.
Sleeping Beauty? I think Shrek did a good job on that one it would be hard to fit in a few pages. It also has other different stories which I couldn't wait to get into. The introduction said there were other lesser known stories and fables from around the world. So imagine the face I am making as I come to these titles; The Ape And The Crab, Chicken Licken and Stone Soup just to name a few.
But of course they saved the best for last and that is The Hare And The Tortoise. This is one of my favorites if not because I have heard and watched it so many times and in different languages. I probably wrote it. No I did not write it. I have definitely lost count of how many times but at the end there is always a little smile. Probably because I am thinking of someone who told it better. The energy people get as they tell a story is just marvelous to put it nicely.
There is something I liked about this book. It has twenty one stories and lovely illustrations but it is also small and very portable. Unless you are the kind of person who likes big books with pages filled with color illustrations and six page stories take up the whole book you find this one pleasantly different. There is nothing wrong with big colorful books unless its raining and you have to decide what to save in your bag. Been there it is not pretty.
Just had to say that. Needless to say the size was one of the things that drew me to the book and once I started I finished it off in one go. Five stars. I know generally with bedtime story books you are supposed to read one story then go to sleep but who does that right? Right?
